Build the welcome sequence before the newsletter

A new subscriber is the most interested they will ever be. A monthly newsletter makes them wait; a welcome sequence meets them.

The newsletter gets all the attention and the welcome email is a one-line confirmation. It should be the other way round: the first week after a sign-up is when people open, click and buy.

Four emails, one week

Day 0: the thing they signed up for, and one sentence on what to expect. Day 2: the single most useful thing you know, no pitch. Day 4: a story about a customer like them. Day 7: the offer, with a reason to act this week.

Write it once, improve it forever

  • Watch where people stop opening and fix that email first.
  • Move the best-performing newsletter of the year into the sequence.
